The Singing Dogs in the Wind

Female/50/German, English, Northern European
Location: Makaha Valley, Oahu

We moved to Oahu in September 1969 and my family moved to Makaha valley in 1971, roughly. It was great back then, was still pretty much country kine style; every family lot was good size, like a quarter acre. Our property had big mango trees and the back of the property was untamed, just plenty tall grass and koa, good for cutting trails, making forts and flying kites bought from the old corner store, when had good wind!
We lived on an old bumpy road. Pretty much was all old bumpy roads back then. Kaulaili road was our road with a long driveway to the property. Nobody ever came our house for trick or treat, too spooky! First year we lived there my mom bought candy to give out but no one would come down the long dark driveway to the house! Us kids never mind though cause we scored extra candy!

On our property had two houses: one large house that was actually half of a barracks, and a smaller house that was officer quarters: old crystal doorknobs and windows that were operated by rope pulleys, big heavy doors in the main house. It was a cool place to live for a kid, but also spooky.

I remember one night I was alone in the big house while my brothers and their friends were hanging out in the small house. My parents were out for the evening. I was young grade school age, alone in the main house sitting in my dad's recliner watching one of three channels just before had cable. I was happy I got to watch whatever I wanted since we only had one TV back then. It was dark and never have any wind, only little bit light on in the house, fairly quiet except once in a while hearing my brother them laughing next door, sucking 'em up, making fun of each other!

Then from far away up the valley I could hear a faint noise, like dogs barking and howling. Then could hear it a little bit louder. As this captured my attention, it seemed as though the sound was moving down the valley coming our way. I noticed another sound with it; it sounded like wind, best I could make out, yet all was quiet with our dogs and no breeze blowing, more still then anything. I listened as it came closer, now able to tell it was traveling from the back of the valley down toward the ocean, traveling through each road one at a time. You could hear the change as soon as it hit the next road down. The dogs on that road would begin to howl and singsong as dogs do when they're alerting about seeing something like a spirit. As the next road of dogs began to make noise, the dogs from the previous road would become quiet. As it moved closer road by road you could hear a loud wind through the trees, although not yet in our yard. Finally it came closer and closer until it was on our road.

All the dogs on our road began to sing and howl and the once still trees began to shake and sway from a strong wind rustling the leaves. Then a strong gust of wind blew through our house slamming every door shut one by one! As it moved on to the next road closer to the ocean, our dogs quieted and the trees settled, beginning again with the dogs on the next road until all sound stopped, our place quiet, the trees still, the dogs quiet.

Later I had been told by my friend's parents of how the spirits travel from the heiau in the valley towards the ocean and back again. I listened as they told me of night marchers and what the dogs see and how they respond. Thus began Auntie's education, with many more experiences to follow.

Aloha to all the kupunas who raised the young haole girl with love giving me the sense of Ohana and love that was missing in my own home. Mahalo Nui Loa to my Hawaiian Aunties and Uncles and the beautiful local people who became my Ohana.

Ali'i of Waiahole

Informant: Male/60/Filipino,Hawaiian,Chinese

Location: Windward Oahu

I grew up on the Windward side of Oahu in Waiahole. Our neighborhood was very small with just maybe 10 families. When I was 14 years old I began delivering the newspaper from the Old Poi Factory all the way to Hakipu'u with my dog Oso and got to know most of our neighbors.

We had this one Tutu name Mrs. Davis. She had a Hawaiian maiden name which I can't remember right now. After my paper route was done for the day I would end up at Mama-san's store in Waikane for a soda and often would see Mrs. Davis and Mr. Kamaka sitting on soda crates in full-on conversation speaking in pure Hawaiian. Of course I would sit and listen since it was such a beautiful language. While collecting for the newspaper one day I ended up talking to Mrs. Davis about our neighborhood. I found out she grew up in Waiahole, and she remembered seeing the Alii's with their followers come down from the mountain (where they lived for the cool weather)to the ocean along a path that was next to where my family lived, and on occassion would rest on our property. My dad, our farmhand and my younger brother have found countless Hawaiian artifacts on our property which showed that indeed our land was once used by ancient Hawaiian.

When I was around 11 years old I remember hearing a lady chanting in Hawaiian late at night around 9:00 p.m. accompanied by the pounding of the Ipu drum and the sounds of people marching. I could hear it but I never saw anything. Worst part of it alI was that I was the only one in my family who could hear it. My parents thought I was pupule (crazy) and sent me to bed early that first time. In all, I heard the chanting and Ipu drums and marching at least four times while growing up in Waiahole. In 2004 I lived in Nu'uanu along Nuuanu Stream area on Judd Street. I thought I heard drums late one night. I looked out my balcony to see if anyone was up late playing their stereo, but it was 1:00 a.m. and our condo had rules about loud noise after 10:00 p.m. I didn't hear chanting or the Ipu...the beat was steady and sounded like war drums.

Lastly, my brother Ana and I stayed out late one school night playing ball with the gang. We were afraid to go into the house since we could hear mom yelling at the girls to finish the dishes and start their homework, so we decided to shower outside and sneak in later when dad got home. While all lathered up with soap and butt-naked, I saw what I thought was one of our next door neighbors, Popei, walking toward us along the fence. I thought he probably got locked out too and planned on sleeping over. I jumped out of the shower and onto the fence to greet him with "Eh, Popei!" but the shadow of a full grown man kept walking up toward the mountains along that same trail Mrs. Davis said the Ali'i used. I saw no face or features, just the outline of a person in the dark walking away. I ran screaming "Ghost!" all the way to the main house with my brother in tow...both butt-naked! Mom saw us and couldn't stop laughing and when she did stop she told us "That'll teach you to come home late, now go do your homework!"

The Night Marachers of Waimanalo Beach

Informant: Male/ 28 /Hispanic
Location of Incident: Waimanalo Beach, Oahu

When I was 16 years old, I was finishing my junior year of high school. There were many summer parties and I tried to go to as many as I could since I was going into my senior year. One night, my friend and I checked out an interesting party in Maunawili but were rejected after 30 minutes since the cops started to arrive and hang around. My friend and I went to go look for the next party in the area and drove to Waimanalo since we heard there was a party there. It was a graduation party that was held for family and was ending when we got there so we pretty much had a beer or two and left. We decided since it was only a  little after midnight to cruise at the beach at Sherwood Forrest. So, my friend, who was driving his 4 Runner, drove into the forest with his vehicle and found a quite spot to hang out, drink, and talk story about past and upcoming events.

I noticed after using the phone that the lights on the beach were still moving around. I figured again, somebody's probably down there chilling. I had a thought of going out there to check what was going on, maybe it was someone fishing or something. But as I was about to step out I noticed the lights again at the beach. This time I looked more into the light to see what was out there. I realized that I was not looking at flash lights moving around, and there was nobody out there playing around. I noticed the light looked sort of like multiple lamps or a torch lamps that was rocking back and forth. As my sight was beginning to focus more at what I was looking at, I realized I was seeing shadows walking along the beach.

I noticed when we parked near a small sand hill going down into the beach there were lights moving up and down. I figured it was kids or somebody at the beach with flash lights walking around, so it never occurred to me as anything important. It was dark in the forest, but the night in general was extremely dark. I was a little out of it since the night before; we had been at a block party on my friends lane. I noticed my friend stopped talking after a while and looked as if he was zoning out from a long day. So I called up a friend to ask if we could crash over since we were unfit to go home.

The shadows were walking in formation and it seemed as if there was hundreds  of shadows walking past these lamps. I realized that the lamps were not rocking back and forth but were continuously moving forward. I froze in place, and couldn't move. I was so frightened when I began to realize what I was looking at. I turned to my friend who was still zoning out, but with extreme alert coming from his eyes. I knew I wasn't the only one seeing what was out on the beach and ocean. My body was trembling and my teeth were grinding together. I slowly asked my friend what he thought he was looking at, and his response was as I expected.

Night Marchers.

I felt as if I was glued in my seat and felt as if my energy was draining from my body. I felt extremely tired, but at the same time awake as hell to witness this event. All of a sudden my friend snapped out of his zoned state and started coughing and appeared to be gasping for air as if he wasn't breathing. He then started the vehicle, threw the gear in reverse,  and floored it out of the forest. I remember it was so quick that when we got into the parking lot his vehicle bumper smashed into the ground as we went from the grass terrain to the asphalt. He drove out as if he was panicing.

As we were driving back to Kailua, my friend told me he felt like someone was choking him from his driver window. We went back to Kailua to visit my friend who was expecting us to come over. When we got there, we told the story what happened at the beach to our friends. It was then that I realized that on that night it was a new moon. Also, I realized that my friend is Hawaiian, and his family comes from an old Hawaiian bloodline. Most likely, whatever was choking my friend at the time was a friend of the family or a relative trying to get his attention to get out of there. Today, we still talk about the event that occurred and how we were extremely lucky to come out of it alive and safe.

It Knew My Name

Informant: Male/unknown age/unknown ancestry
Location: Ahae'ho'omalu, Big Island

The following is true and I was not on any kind of drug or alcohol, nor was I dreaming. I lived on Kauai for about 15 years spending my high school years there. I had heard many bizarre and spooky stories, including stories about the Night Marchers. I had no idea that one day I would encounter them up close!
In May of 1995 I went to the Big Island for a job interview. I didn't get the job and I was "marooned" on the island, as I was broke and didn't know anybody. I pitched a tent in Anae'ho'omalu, on the Kona side of the Big Island, far enough away from the resort area where I would not be easily found. This would be my "base camp" until I could get myself on my feet again.

My tent was well hidden in the Ke'awe and you could not see it unless you knew it was there. I pitched the tent on the only flat ground as the area is all lava fields. I saw many petroglyphs and a partially collapsed wall where I pitched my tent next to, utilizing the flat ground.

One night, during the later part of the month when the moon was waning and crescent-shaped, I bedded down. It was about 10:15pm and I was just nodding off to sleep when quickly I came to my senses because I heard someone walking past my tent on the beach trail.

It sounded like plastic buckets "clunking" together, so I figured the sounds was just someone out for a night dive. I laid still and waited for them to pass. I thought it odd that whoever they were had no lights. However, my single-man tent was covered completely with a canopy and I could not see out.

Then suddenly, someone came to my well-hidden tent and called my name, in a clear and unmistakable deep, masculine, guttural voice. I knew instantly that this was a voice not of this world!

I could "sense" that this "entity" was enjoying scaring me and it knew that I knew it was a ghost. It had almost a hint mischief in it's voice. It knew I was freaking out, and it knew my name to top it all off! Nobody knew me on the Big Island at that time. I certainly didn't tell the job interviewer that I was camped on the beach.

I could also sense that this being "had to go" as if it had more important things to do. I laid still, petrified with fear for about 20 minutes until I felt I was clear to go. I grabbed my blanket and ran as fast as I could along the beach to the lighted resort area about a 1/4 mile away.

I later overheard one of the employees of the resort not too long after the experience who saw "The Night Marchers" as she was driving home through the lava fields after completing her night shift. I believe it to be the same night that I had my weird encounter.

I looked up the date and the phase of the moon in a book of the Hawaiian Moon Calendar. One of the things it said was it was the time that The Night Marchers are seen! Another book explained the "clunking" sounds as calabashes suspended from a pole in which provisions were carried when on a journey in the days of old. This experience remains to this day, the most inexplicable event of my life.

College Experience

Informant: Male/19 years old/Portuguese Ancestry
Location: University of Hawaii at Hilo Dorms, Big Island

During high school, I spent my summers in an academic college prep program at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Part of the programs goals was to simulate life in college, and so this included living in the dorms for about six weeks.

My first summer in the program, I was a little apprehensive about living in the dorms. The day I moved in, I felt uncomfortable in my dorm room. However, I just chalked it up to being away from home and shyness. As soon as I came out of my shell and got to make friends, I didn't feel uncomfortable in my room anymore.

Since my first day in the dorms, there has always been ghost stories surrounding the particular dorm we lived in. Students would often spread rumors of ghostly children playing the halls or that the dorm was in the path of a Night Marchers' trail. I was very skeptical about it.

Then one day, I experienced something that I cannot find an explanation for.

I was lying in my bed, alone in my dorm room, just relaxing from studying. I was just lying down, and listening to some music, nothing else. Then, I began to feel a hand behind my head. I was scared, because the door was closed and I knew that I was alone. Then the hand began to move around, underneath my head, as if it was playing with my hair. I tried my best to remain calm, I didn't want to make any sudden movements. I slowly began to move away from my bed. As soon I moved my head, my pillow which my head had been on, went flying across the room and hit the wall across from my bed with tremendous force. At the moment, I felt like I was threatened, and I just ran like the building was on fire.

I found the program director, and of course I brought it up with her. She just laughed at me and blamed the whole experience on me being scared about living away from home for so long. However, she did let me move into another room, and since then I've never been into that room again.

After that summer, I've spent later summers in that dorm, and have never experienced anything like that in the dorms again.

Night Marchers at Kamehameha

Informant: Female/16/mixed ancestry
Location: Kamehameha School, Oahu campus

I was walking back to Kapuaiwa dormitory at Kamehameha one night around 9:00 p.m.ish when my flower blew out of my hair. I chased it all the way to the bottom of the dorms. I made my way back up to Kapuaiwa but took a wrong turn and ended up walking to the cafeteria. When I got there it was real quiet and it started creeping me out, so I went the back way to get into the dorm when all of a sudden got to I started hearing the beats of the pahu.

I thought it was the hula team practicing, but they were all the way down at Keku, so I decided to follow the beat of the pahu. It led back down to the front door of Kapuaiwa.

I got to the bottom of Kapuaiwa and realized the sound got really loud at Lunalilo dorm, so I walked around a bit and noticed that the sound was coming out of nowhere. As I got closer to the lounge at Lunalilo, it started to get real hot (and it was a cool night) and the pahu was getting louder, so I freaked out and started to walk back up. I heard something, so I turned around and saw that a fire had started. I called campus security but by the time they came, the fire was gone and it seemed like there wasn't even a fire at all. Security told me go back to my dorm and just get some rest because they said I looked real tired.

I got back up to my dorm, took a shower, did my homework and stuff and then decided to go to bed. I woke up around 2:00 a.m. and was real thirsty, so I decided to go down to the lounge to get a drink of water. When I got there, I heard the beat of the pahu again and chanting. I remembered the article I read earlier that day about the night marchers and started to wonder if that’s what I was hearing.

I sat down on the couch to drink my water when I saw a torch coming down the hall outside. I thought I was seeing things so I just closed my eyes. When I opened them again and I could see night marchers walking down the hall and as they walked, the pahu and the chanting got louder. I ran back up to my room scared and hid under the covers. I looked out my window that over looks the whole dormitory and on the main road, there were the night marchers walking the campus.

Night marchers are so scary because they take people with them if they get in their path. I told my friend's about what I saw the next day, and they said that some of their roommates had to go to the nurse in the middle of the night because they we're sleep walking outside.
