The Girl in the Rain

Informant: Male/42/undisclosed ethnicity
Location: Kailua, Oahu

Back in 2004, I was at a bar one night in Kailua playing pool. I was heading home to Kaneohe just after midnight and it was raining heavy. I was at the traffic light in front of Castle Medical Center with no cars behind me when I noticed someone standing at the bus stop; just standing there in the rain instead of under the shelter. I thought to myself, "What kind of idiot stands in the rain like that with no jacket, etc., and no buses running?"

So as I was passing the bus stop, I was trying to see who the idiot was when I saw it was a young local girl, probably mid -20's. She was looking at me passing so I pulled over to the side and reversed a bit to ask if she was going to Kaneohe, but instead she just jumped in the car. So I asked if she was going to Kaneohe and she said, "No, I have to go to K-Mart on Nimitz." I thought to myself, "F******-a, man."

So on we went without talking and I noticed that she had a few scratches on her arms and face, so I thought maybe she was in a fight or something. When we reached town I finally asked if she had missed the last bus and she said no, she was in an accident and she smashed her car. After she said that all the hair on my neck and head felt tingly like it was standing because it dawned on me that this girl is dead at the hospital and her spirit is here in my car, determined to get to K-Mart.

On I went trying hard not to be scared. Finally, I park the car at K-Mart and she doesn't get out until I say, "We're here." Then she just jumped out of the car and never said thanks or anything and I noticed that she had no shoes, and I thought to myself, "Nahh cannot be." So I watched her walking to the K-Mart entrance, and before she even got close to the door she faded away, and my eyes just widened without blinking. I took a few deep breaths to calm down before heading home. I never looked at the passenger seat the whole drive home. I turned up the music and turned the rear view mirror upwards.

A Calling Spirit at the Wailua Golf Course

Informant: Male/29/Hawaiian-Mixed ancestry
Location: Wailua Golf Course, Kauai

Some friends and I decided to go fishing overnight behind the Wailua Golf Course. We got the poles ready, set up some tents, and built a fire and we were set for the night. It was a normal routine for us to drink and play music, so it was obvious that we'd do the same on this night.

After a few drinks, a friend and I decided to use the restroom nearby on the golf course. When the restroom was in sight, my friend ran ahead to use the restroom first and by the time I got there he was already finished. I did my business and looked for my friend outside, and no surprise came when I couldn't find him seeing as how he liked playing tricks on people. I thought it wouldn't be that hard to find him seeing as how it was a full moon and I could see around the golf course fairly well. It was also going to be hard for a man of his size (6' 3", 250+ lbs.) to hide behind the little palm trees on the golf course.

I heard a noise behind me and turned around to see a large figure moving behind the trees. I sneaked around the tree to scare him, but no one was there. I heard someone call my name from behind me and I saw him looking at me from behind the tree. I headed towards him as that was the way toward the camp anyway, but I couldn't find him when I get to the tree. I heard him call me again, this time leading deeper into the golf course. I was getting tired of his games, but obliged anyway. I kept my eye on him the whole time; I could only see his head, but I could barely make out his facial features. As I got closer, he slowly moved behind a tree again and when I get to the tree, he was nowhere to be found. Once again, he called me, this time even further into the golf course and away from our campsite.

At this point I realized that there's no way that he could get that far that quickly and I started to get creeped out. Just in case, I yell to him that I was going back to the camp. He said no and insisted that I follow him... That was my cue to book it out of the golf course and back to the campsite.

When I got back, my friend was already there and he asked where I went. He told me that he was waiting for me outside of the restroom and when I came out I told him to go back to the campsite alone because I wanted to check something out. I told him the last time I saw him was when I went into the restroom and didn't talk to him or see him when I came out. We decided to just pee in the bushes for the rest of the night and we've never been on the golf course at night again.

A Pressing in Hale Wainani

Informant: Male/22/Mixed ancestry
Location: UH Manoa, Oahu (Hale Wainani)

It was storming and I wanted to go to the beach to see how big the waves were. I walked over the little grassy hill to the beach and saw the giant waves crashing on the shore. I excitedly ran to the shore to get a closer look and realized that something didn't belong.

There was a little playground on the beach with a little girl sitting on the swings. I could tell that it would start to rain very hard soon, so I went over to see if the little girl was okay. She was facing away from me, but as I got closer, I recognized her to be my friend's little sister. I called out to her, but the wind was so strong that I don't think she could hear me. I finally get to her and I tap her shoulder, but she doesn't turn around. I move in front of her and notice that her head is down and she's crying, so I kneel down in front of her to get down to her level to comfort her. I reach out to touch her shoulder and she grabs my hand and looks up at me. Her eyes are completely black and tears of blood flow down her cheeks.

I wake up.

I'm still a little shaken by the nightmare and I begin to calm down as I realize I'm still in my dorm room. It's a nice night, the moon is out, I'm warm under my blanket, and I'm sleeping comfortably on my side. I try to shift positions and realize that I can't move. I try to roll, kick, anything, and nothing works. At which point I look to my door and notice a black figure resembling a little girl standing in my doorway. My mind immediately thinks back to the nightmare I just had. I try even harder to move. Nothing happens. The shadowy figure slowly makes its way to my bed. It creeps down to the side of my bed and lowers itself so I can't see it over the side of my bed.

Panic sets in.

I see two shadowy hands reach over and grab the side of the bed and, slowly, its head rises next until we are eye level with each other. I struggle to kick it away, but I still can't move. I try to yell at it to get away, but I can't make a sound either. It moves closer to me, we're face to face now. I finally manage to wiggle a finger and that seems to set the rest of my body in motion.

I push away from the shadowy figure and sit up to kick it away, but as I prepare to kick, nothing is there.

Pele Visits the Coco Palms Resort

Informant: Male/40's/Filipino
Locationt: Coco Palms Resort

I was a bartender and my wife was a waitress at the Coco Palms Resort in the 1960's. One night as we were closing up the bar, I heard the door bells chime and turned to see a young woman walking up to the bar. She had long brown hair and a long red dress that covered her feet and made her walk seem unusual. She walked up to me and asked, "May I have a puhi paka, please?"

"I don't know what kind of drink that is. Even if I did, I can't make it for you because we're closed. You need to leave!" She seemed angry with my reply. My wife came running from the other side of the restaurant, "No, honey, she's asking for a cigarette." she told me. "I'm sorry, Ma'am. We don't smoke. May I offer you a free soda instead?" I began to object, but my wife quickly cut me off.

"No," the woman said, "Thank you for your kindness." And with that, she turned and walked her unusual walk out of the restaurant.

"You idiot!" My wife yelled at me. "I'm in charge of this bar and I'm not going to give free drinks or cigarettes to anyone that barges in after hours!" I barked back.

"Didn't you see her eyes?" She asked. "When you told her to leave, there was fire in her eyes. You pissed her off! That was the goddess Pele. If she ever asks you for something, you give it to her!"

"How do you know it was her?" I asked.

"Besides the fire in her eyes? I could tell by the way she walked... She was floating."

Fly Like an Eagle

Informant: Male/25/Hawaiian-Mixed Ancestry
Location: Kapaa, Kauai

In the late 1990's I read in the newspaper that a boy that lived down the road from us had accidentally hanged himself while he was playing in his yard. I later found out that he was one of my brother's basketball rivals; they had recently competed against each other in a three-point shootout tournament which my brother won. I asked my brother about him and he didn't have much to say other than he knew the boy's favorite song was "Fly Like An Eagle" because it was recently featured in Space Jam and Michael Jordan was his favorite basketball player.

A few nights later, our neighbors came over to play video games and spend the night. The Christmas before, I received an Electronic Hot Shot Basketball game and we were playing with that, seeing who could get the highest score. We got bored, put the game away and moved on to the new Playstation my brothers and I also got for Christmas.

We were playing video games and listening to music when the song "Fly Like An Eagle" started playing on the stereo. A minute or so into the song, all the electricity goes out including the Playstation, TV, and lights, so we're in complete darkness. Everything went off except for the stereo; the song was still playing. We were already terrified from the dark and everything turning off except for the stereo when we heard another noise.

The Hot Shot Basketball game had turned on on its own and basketballs were being shot, but all of us were hiding on the other side of the room. We all ran upstairs to find that the electricity was working fine upstairs.

After taking a few minutes to calm down, we all went downstairs together to find that the lights were back on, but the stereo was off and the Hot Shot Basketball had been moved and was used. Till this day, we all swear that we didn't turn the game on and have yet to figure out exactly what happened. Maybe it was my brother's friend paying us a visit to show that the basketball rivalry is still on.

From the Reservoir

Informant: Male/29/Mixed ancestry
Location: Wailua Houselots, Kauai

This happened about 10 years ago.

A really close friend of mine was out drinking late one night and on his way home, drove off the road and drowned in the reservoir. A few days later, I experienced what I have come to know as sleep paralysis.

I woke up in the middle of the night and saw a shadowy figure on top of me. I couldn't breathe and I couldn't move. But because I was aware of what was happening, I just relaxed and it all went away after a few seconds. Thinking nothing of it, I went back to sleep. However, when I woke up the next morning I realized that it wasn't a normal sleep paralysis...

I was very confused when I found grass all over me. I looked around to try to figure out where the grass came from and noticed a giant puddle of muddy water and grass next to my bed... like water from a reservoir.

Spirit Lights Over the Sleeping Giant

Informant: Male/25/Mixed Ancestry
Location: Wailua Houselots, Kauai

It was just before sunrise. The cool night air still lingered and a few bright stars struggled to maintain their presence in the fading night sky. I had just finished working the overnight shift and was on my way home. I looked up to admire the stars and noticed two bright, white lights above the head of the Sleeping Giant that didn't seem to belong.

I pulled off to the side of the road to get a better view -- I wasn't sure if my eyes were playing tricks on me after being awake all night. The lights were still there, like two tiny moons, almost as bright as a full moon, but about half the size and no more than 100 feet above the mountain. One light glided slowly and steadily north toward its destination while the other followed, circling and bouncing around the steady light. The scene was reminiscent of a child eagerly wanting to venture off and explore, yet knows not to stray too far from the parent. They traveled from the head of the Sleeping Giant and out over the bypass until they hid behind the clouds over Kapa'a.

The Lychee Tree in the Back Yard

Informant: Female/68/Hawaiian
Location: Wailua Houselots, Kauai

I've always been afraid of my backyard.

The leaves from the huge lychee trees blocks out the sunlight and deafens the noise from the outside. It's dark with just the sudden rustling of the leaves around you to keep you company. The only ray of sunlight exists between the trees. The only area in my backyard that I feel safe - at least, I used to feel safe.

Although I've never felt comfortable in my backyard, we chose to have a clothesline in between the lychee trees. I went into the backyard a couple times a week to hang our clothes to dry and that's it. One day, while heading to the backyard to hang my clothes, I had a very bad feeling about going back there. It was worse than the normal fear I get going back there; I felt like something bad was going to happen. I had only managed to hang a few shirts when I felt someone from behind me grab my shoulder. I looked to my right and saw a slender hand with blood-red skin and pointy black nails squeezing my shoulder. I didn't want to take the time time to fully turn around and see who it was. I sprinted into the house and immediately called my husband to tell him what happened. He returned home from work a few hours later and we went to the clothesline together. All the clothes had been ripped and thrown all over the place - there were clothes in the trees, dirt, and even on the roof.

Till this day, I refuse to go into my backyard in fear that I won't be so lucky if the hand grabs me again.

Spooning

Informant: Female/30/Hawaiian mixed ancestry
Location: Pahoa, Big Island

I'm afraid to go to sleep tonight.

I kept waking up with the feeling last night that someone was in the room with me. At one point during my rest, I swore I felt a body press up right up against me to cuddle. It even did that snuggling motion when someone is trying to get as close as possible. I smiled with my eyes closed, thinking it was my dog, who sometimes sneaks into my room at night, and felt immediately reassured…

And then I reached out to embrace my dog and pull him closer. It felt larger than my dog. I freaked and opened my eyes, and I saw nothing. I reached out again and felt...nothing.

Dad's Recliner

Informant: Female/16/Ethnicity unknown
Location of Incident: Oahu

I was going out with my friends, without permission from my dad, one Friday night. I was able to sneak out of the house after he went to his room to sleep. After leaving my home as quietly as possible, I met my best friend a few houses down and got into the car.

As we began to drive away I pulled my purse up to my lap, and realized I didn't have my wallet... no money or I.D. means no fun. I convinced my friend to turn around and pull up to my house while I quickly retrieved my wallet. As we came up to my house, my friend had a very bad feeling. She said something didn't feel right. She's kinda special in that she often has feelings before strange or weird things happen.I told her not to be scared and I'd be back super fast.

As I got to my front door, I could see light coming from the living room window. Thinking my dad woke up to watch T.V., I was getting ready for a tongue lashing. I opened the door already formulating an excuse as to where I went when I noticed my dad sitting in the recliner crashed out. I thought that maybe his bedroom was too hot and he decided to come outside to rest. I went quickly to my room to grab my things and past in front of my father's room, whose door was wide open, when I heard a noise coming from within.

I didn't think, but after retrieving my money I realized that I heard snoring coming out of his room. As I walked back over to pass his doorway I peered into his door and the hair on my entire body shot straight up as I witnessed my dad, lying in his bed deep in slumber! My body began to shake uncontrollably and a sense of fear over took me. I struggled to return to the front door, to what felt like freedom.

As I came upon the living room I could see the red glow of the television dancing across the walls of the kitchen. No sound, no noise, just a chill. It got colder and colder as I came around the corner to the living room.
I looked in and saw my father sitting on the recliner, his deep black eyes now looking in my direction. I suddenly heard a voice. I turned to look towards the sound and could hear my friend calling for me frantically from behind the front door. When I turned to look back at my dad I could see a slight grin breaking through his hard clay face. My heart sank, and I didn't know what to do.

My friend finally came through the front door and yelled to get away from it. At that moment, the television turned off and the room went black. We made it out of the house safely, but not without fear. My friend told me that she heard a voice say to her, "Go and get Lea out!". She said it sounded like my dad.

After everything started to calm down, and my friend and I gained courage to reenter the house. The entire home felt different. Back to normal. I believe that because I had bad intentions to deceive my dad, I was shown what it could be like to be deceived myself. I no longer keep things from my friends or family. I have a strange feeling of gratitude to whatever was there that night. I learned a very valuable lesson.

Dried Akule

Informant: Male/52/Japanese ancestry
Location: Ele'ele, Kauai

My boy was about five years old whent this happened. Every Thursday night, my wife used to take him to the library. On their way back, he said out of the blue, "All our ancestors are in the car right now!" My wife thought, oh crap. So she asked who was there. My boy started listing off aunts and uncles who had passed away, and named my brother, who had passed away one or two years prior. My wife asked what they wanted, and my boy said they just wanted to say hi.

He said when they got near Ele'ele McDonald's, all of the spirits left the car, except my brother. My boy asked him, "You not going to go get McDonald's too? You don't want to eat a cheese burger?" My brother told him, no, cheese burgers hurt his stomach. My brother was extremely lactose intolerant, I think maybe he had irritable bowel syndrome. But he hated cheese burgers. I knew this, but there's no way my boy would have known that. My brother then told my boy that he didn't like eating dried akule either, because the salt on it dried out his lips. I didn't know about this, and there's no way my boy would know, so I called my mom to ask.

I told her what my boy had said, and she said, "You know, I knew that he didn't really care for dried akule, but I never knew why." I told her, "Well, now you know."

Lover's Leap

Informant: Male/52/Japanese ancestry
Location: Waimea Landing, Kauai

My boy told me this story. He was with his grandpa and they had some time to kill while waiting for grandma at a doctors appointment, so they decided to have a snack down at Waimea Landing. While they were there, they saw two people, a man and a woman. They were wearing clothing like from the 1800's, and they were talking to each other. Then, suddenly, they both jumped into the ocean.

Grandpa asked my boy, "Did you hear a splash?" Which he didn't. When they got out to investigate, they saw nothing in the water. They didn't stick around long enough to investigate any further.

2:00 a.m.

Informant: Male/52/Japanese ancestry
Location: Kalaheo, Kauai

When my boy was six months old, he began crying in the middle of the night. Every night at 2:00 a.m., he would wake up and cry. At first I let him cry, but eventually I would have to go check on him. When I would enter his room, he would be standing in his crib holding onto the bars, nearest the door, crying and looking for us. This went on every night for about a week. He would cry at 2:00 a.m., I would go to his room, and he'd be in his crib nearest the door. I thought, maybe it's my grandparents visiting. I know that spirits have no concept of time, so I said, "There is a time to visit, and 2:00 a.m. is not the time. Come back at a reasonable time!"

One night when my boy cried, I went to his room as usual, but instead of being near the door, he was facing the window with his back pressed against his crib, crying. Something was at the window. I went over to it and felt a chill, but this chill was only at my legs. I realized whatever was there was not my grandparents, and enough was enough. My wife's cousin contacted a Hawaiian kahuna for us, who came to the house.

At the time that this was going on, they were doing road work on the intersection near my house. After walking around the house, the woman said that there were two Hawaiians coming to my house. Their resting place was near the intersection, and the roadwork had disturbed them. In an attempt to get to the afterlife, they found the brightest light. As children are pure and innocent, they shine brightly, so the spirits were drawn to my boy. The kahuna placed salt in the corner of my boy's room and told me to plant ti leaves at the four corners of my house, which I did. She told the spirits that my boy was not the right light, and they left.

He didn't cry at 2:00 a.m. again.
