Backseat Surprise in Kalihi

Informant: Male/64/Japanese-American
Location: H1 E off-ramp to Kalihi Street mauka

In 1976 I was a drummer in a blues-rock band, returning home to Kalihi from a gig in Haleiwa, around midnight on a Thursday. I took the Eastbound H-1 off-ramp onto Kalihi Street going mauka, which passes in front of the Kalihi Library near the Bishop Museum.

As I looked over my right shoulder to merge to my right, I was shocked to see in my back seat a young woman of high school age, casually looking out the window. She was wearing a 60's era aloha print tunic-type dress, her face illuminated by the older pre-mercury arc streetlights of the decade. As the ramp curved onto Kalihi Street, she turned toward me, showed a look of surprise, and vanished!

I can say that I had nothing to drink that night (the gig was at a church) and I was not sleepy (my normal sleep time was past 1:00 a.m.). Has anyone had similar experiences in the area?

The Voice in The Bedroom

Informant: Female/ 29/Japanese - Puerto Rican ancestry
Location: Mililani, Oahu

The other morning I was getting ready for work when I heard a knock on my door. I said, "Come in," but nobody entered, and I didn't hear anyone leave. So I opened the door and nobody was there. Mom and dad were still asleep.

A couple of nights later I was asleep in my bed and I swear someone whispered in my ear. I couldn't make out what the voice was saying, it was too breathy.

Then last night I was trying to sleep in my bed and I rolled onto my side and heard someone sigh in my right ear. I was scared. But it was probably nothing, right?

Right?

The Hale Lokelani Bathroom

Informant: Male/20's/undisclosed ethnicity
Location: Chaminade University of Honolulu, Lokelani Dorm

I was doing a patrol around the campus when I received a distress call from a student who could not keep her composure. It was a student residing in the Lokelani Dorm on campus. As I pulled up in the golf cart to investigate, a female student ran out of the dorm lobby screaming, "I see bloody people in the mirrors!" So I called our central control office to discuss with my shift lead officer what's going on.

Due to only having two guards on site, it is mandatory to have a guard stay in the office while the other guard does the patrols. The shift lead guard told me to investigate the bathroom in the lobby where the girl claimed she saw gruesome people in the bathroom mirror reflections. As I entered the bathroom, I noticed the lights were off. I attempted to flick the switch on and off, but none of the lights worked. Like a scary movie, I wanted to just close the door and leave. I thought to myself that the person who always investigates something unnatural ends up getting killed. I hesitated in the lobby, thinking if I should man up in front of this girl, or just be a coward and tell her what she saw was nothing, blah blah blah, and leave.

So me, partially wanting to be the hero, decided to go in with my flashlight. At first I stayed in the bathroom doorway where the hallway lights illuminated about four feet into the darkness. I yelled out, HELLO!? CHAMINADE SECURITY! IF THERE'S ANYONE, OR ANYTHING HERE, YOU NEED TO LEAVE NOW! I AM LOCKING UP THIS BATHROOM!" I proceeded to enter further into the bathroom with the bathroom door closing behind me. At this point I was halfway in the bathroom with just my flashlight as a source of light. I stared hard into the mirror for a couple of minutes when I heard something shuffle in the stalls.

I hunched over and shined my light underneath the stalls to see if I see feet or something. At that point I was praying that I wouldn't see anything. I was imagining gangrene corpse feet like the girl from the Ring. Hairs stood up on my arms and neck, and I yelled. "Hello! "once more, all the bathroom stalls from the farthest stall to the closest stall to me started slamming shut. I immediately ran out yelling F*** THIS!!!" I exited the bathroom and locked the door on the way out.

The girl was traumatized and I could see why. I didn't see anything in the mirror but the stall doors slamming was good enough evidence for me to confirm something was there and that I disturbed it more than it already was.

Who's Driving the Lift?

Informant: Male/43/Ethnicity undisclosed
Location: Mapunapuna, Oahu

I work the night shift in a warehouse in Mapunapuna, and on Fridays I work non-stop into Saturday just to get things done. So this happened today, October 29, 2016, and the weird part is it was a little after 7:00 a.m.

On Saturdays, there's usually three of us working, but one guy called out sick for Friday and Saturday, so there was just two of us doing our usual. Around 7:00 a.m. I could hear my coworker still on the stand up lift instead of taking his break, so I wanted to see what he was doing and saw that he just wanted to set things up to make it easier after his 10 minute break. So I walked past him and went towards my desk and saw that I had forgotten to put all of my trash into a bigger bag to be taken out. So from where my desk is, there's a big machine that blocks my view of where my coworker was using the stand up lift, but I could see things below, like legs, and the lower part of the stand up lift. So I grabbed my trash and started putting it into a bigger bag and noticed my coworker came behind and stood by the machine looking at me. I just kept picking up my trash one by one and kept looking back at him, wondering why he was just staring at me instead of helping.

As I started to tie the bag I could still see him standing there out of the corner of my eye, and I started getting irritated. All of a sudden I hear, "beep beep beep," and right as I was done I looked straight in front of me, and I was still able to see my coworker standing on the side. I was about to turn my head towards him to say something like, "Yes, can I help you?" but thought again and asked myself , "If he's standing here staring at me, then who the hell is driving the stand up lift?" So I turned and looked, but nothing was there. I know I saw him turn the corner, stop, and just stand there. And I know I'm not seeing things or imagining things either because our warehouse has good lighting and no dark or shady areas, and I've been doing this for eight years with nothing weird ever happening until today, in the morning, of all times.

I remember growing up hearing similar stories that happen often in Samoa where people see their family member walking past the house, but they just came from inside the house and know their family member is sleeping inside, so they go back inside only to find them still asleep. It happens quite often in Samoa, and they know its a ghost because the family member they see walking past doesn't even acknowledge them, but just looks straight and keeps on walking.

The Mossy Green Wolf of Kailua

Informant: Male/38/Chinese-Caucasian
Location: Kailua, Oahu,  HI

I'm no writer and don't claim to be a story teller. This story really happened, so I found a site that I can tell it on.

This happened back in 1987 when I was 12 years old on [REDACTED] Way in Kailua, Oahu. The kids in the neighborhood used to come out late and play a game called "chuck-it." It was a very quiet cul-de-sac, so no one cared that we would play all night long.

So here it is. We were all hiding in bushes and trees, hiding from the person that was "it." I remember this clearly 'cause it freaked me out and I still think of it today. The rain had just come through at about 2:00 a.m. Yes, we played in the rain too. We were all getting wet and the person who was it had tagged me. I had to come out of my hiding place and go to my friend and neighbor Chad Parris' porch while they continued searching for everyone else. While I was walking across the neighbors long driveway I felt something was looking at me.

I looked back to my left and saw a dark green wolf with bright green eyes staring at me as I walked by. Yes, I do know that there are no wolves or foxes in Hawaii. It didn't run as it slowly walked by me. I froze and could only stare back 'cause of how scared I was. The wolf looked like it had wiry hair, but mossy looking. The size was like a normal grey wolf and it showed me his huge fangs. The strange thing is, it just continued on and never growled or barked. It was like he was just letting me know he was there and not to mess with him. It went on to jump the wall and walked along the lake. I yelled for everyone to come over to see what I just saw, and everyone said I was seeing things. I know what I saw. I didn't play with my friends for almost two weeks after that. They would still go out every night, but I was traumatized. The older locals I told the story to say it was the Goddess Pele and kids should never be out that late on Oahu. I moved away a year later and never saw it again. Since then, I have continued to search Hawaii folklore stories or strange animals in Hawaii and have yet to find another person who has seen it.

In 2006, I went to the movies to watch M. Night Shyamalan's The Lady in the Water. During the movie there is a green wolf creature and I was like OMG is this really happening. The creature looked a lot like what I saw, but his version had red eyes had grass on its back instead of moss. I don't know what legend he pulled that creature from, but that was it. Maybe someone knows the legend or myth this creature comes from, but I need to know and will continue searching...

"She's Coming for You."

Informant: Male/42/undisclosed ethnicity
Location: Waipahu

In 1994 I moved to Waipahu to take care of my grandma at a place called Tropicana Apartments. I was up late working on my cars interior one night and was tired, so just after midnight I decided to go buy cigarettes at the Shell Gas Station and vacuum my car.

I took the back road (Waipahu Road) blasting my music, and as I came up to the traffic light I slowed down to make the right turn on Waikele Road. There weren't any cars or pedestrians around as I made the turn, but as I turned I heard clearly as if it was two inches from my ear, a woman saying angrily, "Turn down the music!" So I moved my head, startled, and looked to the left at where the person spoke so close to my ear. Then I turned my head further looking back, seeing if I drove past anyone. At that same moment, the volume started going down by itself without the knob turning. I let go of the gas pedal wondering, "What the hell?" Then my left forearm from elbow to fingertips started to hurt really bad, as if I left it in a freezer for days. I gassed it to the gas station at the corner and jumped out of my car trying to shake of the cold feeling that was hurting my arm.

As I was confused, I walked to the sidewalk and looked back trying to figure out what just happened. I couldn't figure it out until I looked to the right side of the street and saw the graveyard right next to Waipahu Elementary School. And that's when I realized that what I heard was a ghost. She must have grabbed my arm, too. At that moment my chicken skin had chicken skin and I started jumping to shake it off. As soon as I collected my self I sat in my car and told myself not to go back that way after I bought cigarettes and vacuumed.

After I was done, I saw a bunch of cops pulling a car over on the main road. I didn't want to take that route, so had no other choice but to go the same way I came. I drove home quick without looking at the graveyard or anything on the sidewalks and got home exhausted, went straight into the house, upstairs, without turning on any lights or TV and went straight to bed. I fell asleep quickly and was awoken in what felt like a 10 minute nap buy a little boy.

He was about eight or nine years old, wearing a long-sleeved striped shirt. He grabbed my big toe and kept wiggling it. I got up and looked at him, wondering if maybe my grandma had guest's sleeping over. I lay back down to sleep, but again the boy grabbed my toes and wiggled them until I got up. This time I looked at him, and he pointed to the door and said, "The lady is coming for you." I put my head down again and thought, "What the hell is this kid talking about?" Then I remembered the voice and everything else and sat up, but there was no boy or sound of my door opening or closing.

I got up and went into the other room (my grandma always slept in the living room downstairs) and I felt this woman (I don't know how to explain the feeling but it was powerful) coming down the street towards the apartments. Without looking outside, I could feel her presence. It was so strong, and it moved to the front door and stopped. I ran to my doorway looking around  for an escape because I was thinking she was gonna come up the stairs, but instead I felt her move up to the second floor and come into the house through the wall of the other room I just came from. I ran downstairs and into the bathroom (downstairs bathroom is located under the stairs) and felt her moving past my room. She went down the stairs and stopped halfway, and I felt her coming straight through the stairs, straight at me. That's when I opened the door and ran out the back, flicking the lights on as I ran.  I ran a few buildings away and waited for sunlight before going back home.

The Girl in the Rain

Informant: Male/42/undisclosed ethnicity
Location: Kailua, Oahu

Back in 2004, I was at a bar one night in Kailua playing pool. I was heading home to Kaneohe just after midnight and it was raining heavy. I was at the traffic light in front of Castle Medical Center with no cars behind me when I noticed someone standing at the bus stop; just standing there in the rain instead of under the shelter. I thought to myself, "What kind of idiot stands in the rain like that with no jacket, etc., and no buses running?"

So as I was passing the bus stop, I was trying to see who the idiot was when I saw it was a young local girl, probably mid -20's. She was looking at me passing so I pulled over to the side and reversed a bit to ask if she was going to Kaneohe, but instead she just jumped in the car. So I asked if she was going to Kaneohe and she said, "No, I have to go to K-Mart on Nimitz." I thought to myself, "F******-a, man."

So on we went without talking and I noticed that she had a few scratches on her arms and face, so I thought maybe she was in a fight or something. When we reached town I finally asked if she had missed the last bus and she said no, she was in an accident and she smashed her car. After she said that all the hair on my neck and head felt tingly like it was standing because it dawned on me that this girl is dead at the hospital and her spirit is here in my car, determined to get to K-Mart.

On I went trying hard not to be scared. Finally, I park the car at K-Mart and she doesn't get out until I say, "We're here." Then she just jumped out of the car and never said thanks or anything and I noticed that she had no shoes, and I thought to myself, "Nahh cannot be." So I watched her walking to the K-Mart entrance, and before she even got close to the door she faded away, and my eyes just widened without blinking. I took a few deep breaths to calm down before heading home. I never looked at the passenger seat the whole drive home. I turned up the music and turned the rear view mirror upwards.

A Pressing in Hale Wainani

Informant: Male/22/Mixed ancestry
Location: UH Manoa, Oahu (Hale Wainani)

It was storming and I wanted to go to the beach to see how big the waves were. I walked over the little grassy hill to the beach and saw the giant waves crashing on the shore. I excitedly ran to the shore to get a closer look and realized that something didn't belong.

There was a little playground on the beach with a little girl sitting on the swings. I could tell that it would start to rain very hard soon, so I went over to see if the little girl was okay. She was facing away from me, but as I got closer, I recognized her to be my friend's little sister. I called out to her, but the wind was so strong that I don't think she could hear me. I finally get to her and I tap her shoulder, but she doesn't turn around. I move in front of her and notice that her head is down and she's crying, so I kneel down in front of her to get down to her level to comfort her. I reach out to touch her shoulder and she grabs my hand and looks up at me. Her eyes are completely black and tears of blood flow down her cheeks.

I wake up.

I'm still a little shaken by the nightmare and I begin to calm down as I realize I'm still in my dorm room. It's a nice night, the moon is out, I'm warm under my blanket, and I'm sleeping comfortably on my side. I try to shift positions and realize that I can't move. I try to roll, kick, anything, and nothing works. At which point I look to my door and notice a black figure resembling a little girl standing in my doorway. My mind immediately thinks back to the nightmare I just had. I try even harder to move. Nothing happens. The shadowy figure slowly makes its way to my bed. It creeps down to the side of my bed and lowers itself so I can't see it over the side of my bed.

Panic sets in.

I see two shadowy hands reach over and grab the side of the bed and, slowly, its head rises next until we are eye level with each other. I struggle to kick it away, but I still can't move. I try to yell at it to get away, but I can't make a sound either. It moves closer to me, we're face to face now. I finally manage to wiggle a finger and that seems to set the rest of my body in motion.

I push away from the shadowy figure and sit up to kick it away, but as I prepare to kick, nothing is there.

Dad's Recliner

Informant: Female/16/Ethnicity unknown
Location of Incident: Oahu

I was going out with my friends, without permission from my dad, one Friday night. I was able to sneak out of the house after he went to his room to sleep. After leaving my home as quietly as possible, I met my best friend a few houses down and got into the car.

As we began to drive away I pulled my purse up to my lap, and realized I didn't have my wallet... no money or I.D. means no fun. I convinced my friend to turn around and pull up to my house while I quickly retrieved my wallet. As we came up to my house, my friend had a very bad feeling. She said something didn't feel right. She's kinda special in that she often has feelings before strange or weird things happen.I told her not to be scared and I'd be back super fast.

As I got to my front door, I could see light coming from the living room window. Thinking my dad woke up to watch T.V., I was getting ready for a tongue lashing. I opened the door already formulating an excuse as to where I went when I noticed my dad sitting in the recliner crashed out. I thought that maybe his bedroom was too hot and he decided to come outside to rest. I went quickly to my room to grab my things and past in front of my father's room, whose door was wide open, when I heard a noise coming from within.

I didn't think, but after retrieving my money I realized that I heard snoring coming out of his room. As I walked back over to pass his doorway I peered into his door and the hair on my entire body shot straight up as I witnessed my dad, lying in his bed deep in slumber! My body began to shake uncontrollably and a sense of fear over took me. I struggled to return to the front door, to what felt like freedom.

As I came upon the living room I could see the red glow of the television dancing across the walls of the kitchen. No sound, no noise, just a chill. It got colder and colder as I came around the corner to the living room.
I looked in and saw my father sitting on the recliner, his deep black eyes now looking in my direction. I suddenly heard a voice. I turned to look towards the sound and could hear my friend calling for me frantically from behind the front door. When I turned to look back at my dad I could see a slight grin breaking through his hard clay face. My heart sank, and I didn't know what to do.

My friend finally came through the front door and yelled to get away from it. At that moment, the television turned off and the room went black. We made it out of the house safely, but not without fear. My friend told me that she heard a voice say to her, "Go and get Lea out!". She said it sounded like my dad.

After everything started to calm down, and my friend and I gained courage to reenter the house. The entire home felt different. Back to normal. I believe that because I had bad intentions to deceive my dad, I was shown what it could be like to be deceived myself. I no longer keep things from my friends or family. I have a strange feeling of gratitude to whatever was there that night. I learned a very valuable lesson.

The Singing Dogs in the Wind

Female/50/German, English, Northern European
Location: Makaha Valley, Oahu

We moved to Oahu in September 1969 and my family moved to Makaha valley in 1971, roughly. It was great back then, was still pretty much country kine style; every family lot was good size, like a quarter acre. Our property had big mango trees and the back of the property was untamed, just plenty tall grass and koa, good for cutting trails, making forts and flying kites bought from the old corner store, when had good wind!
We lived on an old bumpy road. Pretty much was all old bumpy roads back then. Kaulaili road was our road with a long driveway to the property. Nobody ever came our house for trick or treat, too spooky! First year we lived there my mom bought candy to give out but no one would come down the long dark driveway to the house! Us kids never mind though cause we scored extra candy!

On our property had two houses: one large house that was actually half of a barracks, and a smaller house that was officer quarters: old crystal doorknobs and windows that were operated by rope pulleys, big heavy doors in the main house. It was a cool place to live for a kid, but also spooky.

I remember one night I was alone in the big house while my brothers and their friends were hanging out in the small house. My parents were out for the evening. I was young grade school age, alone in the main house sitting in my dad's recliner watching one of three channels just before had cable. I was happy I got to watch whatever I wanted since we only had one TV back then. It was dark and never have any wind, only little bit light on in the house, fairly quiet except once in a while hearing my brother them laughing next door, sucking 'em up, making fun of each other!

Then from far away up the valley I could hear a faint noise, like dogs barking and howling. Then could hear it a little bit louder. As this captured my attention, it seemed as though the sound was moving down the valley coming our way. I noticed another sound with it; it sounded like wind, best I could make out, yet all was quiet with our dogs and no breeze blowing, more still then anything. I listened as it came closer, now able to tell it was traveling from the back of the valley down toward the ocean, traveling through each road one at a time. You could hear the change as soon as it hit the next road down. The dogs on that road would begin to howl and singsong as dogs do when they're alerting about seeing something like a spirit. As the next road of dogs began to make noise, the dogs from the previous road would become quiet. As it moved closer road by road you could hear a loud wind through the trees, although not yet in our yard. Finally it came closer and closer until it was on our road.

All the dogs on our road began to sing and howl and the once still trees began to shake and sway from a strong wind rustling the leaves. Then a strong gust of wind blew through our house slamming every door shut one by one! As it moved on to the next road closer to the ocean, our dogs quieted and the trees settled, beginning again with the dogs on the next road until all sound stopped, our place quiet, the trees still, the dogs quiet.

Later I had been told by my friend's parents of how the spirits travel from the heiau in the valley towards the ocean and back again. I listened as they told me of night marchers and what the dogs see and how they respond. Thus began Auntie's education, with many more experiences to follow.

Aloha to all the kupunas who raised the young haole girl with love giving me the sense of Ohana and love that was missing in my own home. Mahalo Nui Loa to my Hawaiian Aunties and Uncles and the beautiful local people who became my Ohana.

The Floating Feet in the Bathroom Stall

Informant: Female/20/Hawaiian, Caucasian
Location: Zippys,Kapolei

I was never a huge fan of public bathrooms, specifically because of the stories I’ve heard about people experiencing the paranormal there. Though I heard things it never scared me off...until now.

My boyfriend, our daughter and myself were eating at this restaurant. I had to use the bathroom and I had a weird feeling before even entering, but what are you gonna do? So I walk into the women’s bathroom and there are only two stalls. Naturally I look to see which is occupied and which isn’t. In the handicapped stall there are these black work shoes floating two to three inches off the ground. I go and sit in the open one and think to myself it’s weird that 2 big feet can’t reach the ground. So I bend over to look and they’re still there, floating. I’m creeped out, so I hurry and go back to my table, telling my boyfriend about what happened and thinking it was weird.

My eyes stay on the bathroom door. We were seated one table away and I’m waiting to see a really short granny come out or something. About 10 minutes later my daughter has to pee and I get up to take her. At the same time two other woman are entering the bathroom and I hold the door for them. Thinking to myself “It’s gonna be a long line because there’s only one stall open.” When we entered I saw one of the women that I held the door for enter into the stall that had those damn floating shoes! I swear I was watching the door the whole time and NO ONE came out.

In the Flashlight's Beam

Female/20/Mixed Ancestry
Location: Nanakuli,Hawaii

I was around 14 or 15 years old and we had recently moved into my grandma's house who had passed away many years before. My uncle, who was previously living in the house, had gone to jail, and because many things he did back then were illegal (like stealing electric) we didn't have any electricity at the time.

One night my dad's friend, my brother, myself and a couple other people were hanging out in the living room. It was around 9:00 pm or so and I was playing with the flashlight. It was on and I happened to face it towards the screen door at some point. Right when I did, my brother and my dads friend started yelling at me to turn the flashlight to the door so they could see. They both ran outside and were yelling, "who's there?!" They checked the entire property then came back inside.

Both of them said that when I faced the light towards the door, they saw a man peeking in at us. When they ran outside, one of them saw a shadow in the front yard and the other saw a shadow going through the neighbor's yard. The neighbor's yard is totally open, so if their were a real man there they would have seen him...but they didn't.

Paperweight

Male / 47 /Filipino-Japanese
Location: Big Island/ Oahu, Hawaii

Over 20 years ago, four of us went to the Big Island for a two week melee of fishing, camping and just having a good old time before going back to school.

We landed in Hilo in the early morning hours, had breakfast at Mcdonald's and picked up our Beach Boy Camper which was a Toyota truck with a over-sized camper mounted to the back. Our trip consisted of stopping and camping at as much sites as we could, playing tourist in a foreign land that we'd never been before. We headed to Kalapana Black Sand Beach where we camped out for some days and then we headed for Kilauea via the Chain of Crater Road. We stopped up at Volcano House to admire the sights and then proceeded to the many lava tubes and craters that make up Kilauea.

Well we stopped at this one spot along the crater and had lunch and beer. We were, I guess, fortunate to have along with us a University of Hawaii Hawaiiana major with us (I won't mention his name). My friend Paul and I decided to get a closer look at the inside of the crater and noticed the a'a lava and the pahoehoe lava littered around the crater. I noticed this one pahoehoe lava rock that would look cool on my desk at home as a paperweight. My friend Paul had the same idea. Before this trip my dad, who was a wise old man, told me not to bring back any rock from the volcano or anywhere; in fact he threatened me not to take any thing at all. So Paul and I talked amongst ourselves and decided to ask our UH major about his opinion on taking the volcano souvenirs. Our Hawaiiana major tells us that if we were sincere about it we should ask Madame Pele if we could have the rocks. So like naive fools, we stood there at the edge of the the crater and yelled out if we could have the rocks. There was no answer from Madame Pele. we took that as a "yes." We packed up our precious cargo and left for the great frontier. Through the remainder of our trip, it was nothing but choke fish to eat, starry nights and sunny skies and there basically couldn't have been a more awesome vacation.

We got home to Honolulu, everyone went on their merry way. High school started up for fall season and life went on. About six months since our trip to the Big Island, Paul's and my household experienced an all too weird change.

I got a call one day from Paul. He told me that while he was working at the Gibson Dept. Store in Mapunapuna one night, he finished his grocery job and went to his car. When he got to where his car is usually parked he noticed it was missing, stolen as what HPD later explains. Paul never found his car but later it was found in Waianae. Right after his car got stolen, my house got burglarized and our second car got stolen too because they got a hold of our extra keys. We never linked what happened to Paul and my dad's car and our house. Maybe it was all coincidental.

Another time, I was cruising at home one afternoon when my parents burst through the door arguing about missing money. I asked my mom what happened. She explained that they withdrew $600 dollars from the bank and placed the envelope of money in my moms bag. She went on to say that while they were driving home, she opened the handbag to check on the money and found it missing. They scoured the parking lot right after and even checked with the teller if she had seen the envelope of money. No money was ever found.

One day my mom was cleaning the house and she came across the rock in my room. She called for my dad and my dad hit the roof. He blamed all the misfortune on the rock in my room and he mentioned the same for Paul's car getting stolen. All my dad wanted to do was to get rid of the rock even though it meant me swimming back to the Big Island. Things got weirder. One day I noticed that there was like some kind of object in me eyes. It first felt like there was dust or dirt in my eye but as weeks went by, it felt like there was a piece of rock inside. I would go through bottles of eye wash but to my dismay it still felt the same. I finally went to an eye doctor and after the test he said my vision was 20/20. I still complained about the sensation in my eye, so the doctor gave me some extra strength eye wash and sent me home. My vision got worse over time. I just lived with the discomfort. As for Paul, I hadn't heard anything about any more problems. By this time my mom and dad made plans to fly us all up the Big Island for some vacation and to return the rock. My dad booked our flight for one weekend, and he told me to call Paul and bring his rock because my dad wanted all rocks off this island and the bachi to end.

It was now the Thursday before our trip. Paul brought his rock and I placed both rocks in a shoebox and waited for our big trip. We flew out on Aloha Airlines and made it safely on the Big Island. We grabbed our bag and my dad and I went to grab our rental car. As we were leaving, my mom who was watching the bags called out hysterically for us to come. She had this mouth open, bug-eyed look on her face. My dad asked her what the yelling was all about. So she stuck her hand in the bag and showed us the $600.00 that was missing. It was still in the envelope that the teller gave them. My dad had his doubts. He told her she didn't look good in her bag before she left the bank the first time and that it was probably in one of the pockets. But my mom told him that the bag she had was totally different from the one she had that day at the bank. Coincidental?

We packed up our rental car and arrived at the Hukilau Hotel in Hilo. I was too tired to go anywhere so I sat on the lanai while my parents got a bite to eat. It was a nice cool night, and the stars and the full moon were out. Our room overlooked a canal right across the street, and I stared at the waters and noticed the reflection of the stars and the full moon. Then I realized that my vision was cleared up and I could see clearly. I told my mom that I could see better again. She never said anything back.

Early the next day we headed up to Kilauea Crater and my dad asked me where we got the rocks. I couldn't remember anything, so we decided to find a nice spot to put the rocks and leave an offering of laulau and a bottle of beer. Maybe Pele would like a quick lunch and a beer. I don't know why it was a laulau and beer combo. I then stood by the rim of the crater and apologized for taking the rocks, sincerely. As we were standing around and admiring the scenery, a park ranger showed up to check on us. My dad told him what I did and what had happened. The pleasant Japanese ranger chuckled and then told us that we weren't the only ones that had problems. He went to tell us that his department has to go down to the post office at the airport once a month to empty out one of the many carts designated for the park service and bring the load of rocks and other items up the volcano to deposit them back inside the park area. Each package has it's own reason and story, but everyone just wants to return the rocks to there rightful home. The stories are the same: bad luck had come to them.

Since we returned the rocks to their rightful home there have been  no other strange things.Well, we hope.

Evil Eyes

Female/27/Ethnicity undisclosed
Location: Wahiawa, Oahu

I lived in an apartment building and became really close with two of my neighbors. We would often have get togethers in each others houses and drink. Well one night we were in one of my neighbor's apartment when we got into the paranormal and things of that nature. My neighbor told me he found a bible hidden in his apartment with a picture of a woman underneath it. Till this day I can still remember her picture and the chicken skin it gave me.

After seeing that picture all I could think about was those eyes she had and how it looked like if I stared at them any longer she would snatch me up right into the picture. It was just something about her eyes that just gave you an instant feeling that something was very dark and sinister about this lady. Needless to say I was freaked out. Who was this lady, and why was her picture underneath that bible? I mean, to go and hide a bible and put someone's picture underneath it seems an extreme precaution to go through.

I finally got sleepy enough to fall asleep. I was dreaming a good dream it seemed, at first. I was with my mother in my apartment (my mother had passed away), but it was my mother so in my dream it was very pleasant. The dream seemed so real it was as if I was really going through the motions. My mother was as sweet as she always was, but for some reason she kept on saying not to go to work and to stay with her. I politely explained, "I can't miss work, you raised me better than that," and I would continue what I was doing. Then she'd say again, "Don't go to work, don't leave, stay with me," with a little more forceful voice. And I would reply the same and continue what I was doing, until it came time for me to leave and go to work. I reached for the door, and what seemed to be my mother at first grabbed my wrist and pulled with great power and said "Stay with me." I turned to look back, but it wasn't my mother. It was the lady in the picture I had just seen with those eyes staring back at me.

I immediately woke up in horror, extremely creeped out. I didn't even try to go back to sleep that night. Ever since then in that apartment I felt as if that woman's entity wanted to do harm to me. I could feel her eyes on me in every room of my house.

As soon as I got the courage to speak about it, I talked to the neighbor who had found the picture. I told him about my dream and he laughed at me. In my embarrassment I went home, trying to convince myself that it was just a dream. Then I about a week later that neighbor came to talk to me. He said he talked to the landlord and showed him the picture of the woman. The landlord told him she was a former tenant that killed herself by setting her apartment building on fire. The landlord also informed him that the picture might have been put there by the lady's brother who claimed that she was possessed days before she killed herself.

Needless to say I moved out as soon as I could, but I will never forget what happened to me and how I felt.

Menehune of Mililani Mauka

Informant: Male/Age unknown/ Japanese Ancestry
Location: Mililani Mauka, Oahu

I am hoping by sharing this story, other folks in Mililani Mauka will share their stories. There is definitely something going on up here but I can’t seem to find any history, tales, fact or fiction supporting my experiences up here.

My family and I moved into a brand new home in Kapanoe, a subdivision at the top of Mililani Mauka, about six years ago. My son, now eight, was two at the time. Many nights at around 2 am, he would call out for me and I would wearily go to his room, hop in bed with him where we would both fall asleep. One night, after calling for me, he pointed to a corner of his room and asked, “Daddy, who’s that?” I am actually blind but, needless to say, the hair on my arms and the back of my neck stood straight up. The next night, I permanently moved into his bedroom.

Over the next month or so, my son would regularly awaken around 2 am, sit up, and stare at this particular corner of his room. He described what he saw to me as a boy that looked like a little man. One night, I asked my son if the little man-boy was telling him anything. My son replied, “Yeah, he’s putting his finger to his lips and telling me ‘Shhh.’” That was it – I called a kahu to bless the house, which he did, and planted a couple dozen ti leaves all around the house.

Over the years, my son gradually saw less and less of this little man-boy but would still occasionally wake up at around 2 am and jump into bed with me as I was, and still am, sleeping in his room. Although these appearances diminished, I couldn’t help but notice that, even with our windows closed, shutters would open and doors would slam. Could this little man-boy be a menehune just trying to befriend my son and play pranks on me? For the longest time, I didn’t bring this up with anyone except for a few family members and friends who I knew wouldn’t laugh at me.

One day this past Summer, for some reason, while talking to a former neighbor who was visiting, I mentioned this little man-boy spirit or ghost to him and I could tell from his reaction that he knew exactly what I was talking about. He shared how, when he lived in the neighborhood and had a sleep-over birthday party for his son, one of the boys was woken and startled by this very same little man-boy, got freaked out, and insisted his parents pick him up right then and there … at 2:00 a.m.
Then, just a few weeks ago, a neighbor across the street mentioned how his young son woke up one night at around 2 am and saw something little walking up the stairs toward his room. And to top all of these encounters off, the day after Halloween, I bumped into my new next door neighbors who embarrassingly laughed and asked if I knew about any ghosts or menehune in the neighborhood. I froze, dropped my jaw, got chicken skin up and down both arms and on the back of my neck … “Why?” I asked. The husband replied, "because our two-year old was talking to someone last night and when we asked who it was, she said a little boy. … and when we asked if the little boy said anything, our two-year old simply put her finger to her lips and said, ‘hush’”.

The Forgotten Music Box

Informant: Male/26/Chinese ancestry
Location: Pahoa Valley, Oahu

A friend of mine who works in real estate came over one night to shoot the breeze. He was telling me about a certain apartment in a certain building somewhere in Makiki that was impossible to rent.

From what he knows, weird things would happen in the kitchen. Doors and drawers would pop open on their own. If you've ever seen the movie Paranormal Activity 2 and remember the kitchen scene, the occurrence is something along the lines of that. People would move in, and they would move right out.

As my friend is telling me about this, we hear a few lines of a faint melody. Faint music box music. And we're both thinking, what the hell? Is that a music box? Then I remembered that I did have a music box that I was given years ago by my parents. It was somewhere in my room, in a box buried somewhere. When I looked for the source of the music, I found my music box. It had fallen out of a box that I thought was in the back of my closet, but there it was on the floor.

It was probably just a strange coincidence, but it did provide a soundtrack for the conversation.

Spirits in The Bank

Informant: Male/26/Chinese ancestry
Location: Kapahulu, Oahu

I work at the Kapahulu branch of a certain bank. One day recently I was on my lunch break eating with my boss in the break room when I feel a slight tug on my shirt collar. It felt like someone was trying to fix my collar. I turned around and nobody was there.

I asked her, “Did you see anything behind me?” which sounds completely crazy already, so I told her I felt someone tug on my collar. My boss was like, “You’re just tired.” Which I was, but I know what I felt and it definitely felt real. The tugging felt like an actual hand.

A few days after that I was coming back again on my lunch break with some food and I walked into the office, where my boss was again. Out of the corner of my eye I see someone’s shadow walk into the hallway heading in the direction of the bathroom. I thought it was another employee, but when I walked into the hallway nobody was there. I didn’t bother asking my boss if she saw anything.

A similar thing happened to a coworker at another branch. She had just closed down and was checking to make sure everything was in order. She looked at the door, and in the reflection of the door she saw a little boy. When she turned around, nobody was there. She was the only person there.

I mean, I’m known for being nail-bitingly neurotic when it's busy, but I know what I felt, and I know what I saw.

Strage Occurences at Solomon Elementary School

Informant: Female/59/Puerto Rican ancestry
Location: Schofield Barracks, Oahu

Solomon Elementary School is located on Leilehua Plains on the base of Schofield. Legend has it that it’s a gathering place of Hawaiians and Hawaiian military operations happened there. Solomon is also in the path of the night marchers. Many teachers have reported strange unexplainable things happening both in after-school and during-school hours.

Teachers have reported hearing people outside the doors, walking up and down when they have been working late in the evening. When they would look, nobody would be there. Teachers have also experienced in a certain room the radio turning on all by itself. It always happens in the same room.

One of the portables near the fields would experience a locking phenomenon. Whenever a teacher would leave, the door would lock from the inside. It’s a deadbolt lock that you can’t lock it from inside, because if it locks from the inside, logically the students could lock you out. In this same room quite recently (maybe a year or so ago) teachers and EA’s reported that their phones would inexplicably call each other. The teacher’s phone would call the EA’s cell phone when neither of them were touching them. Another instance reported that one day the teacher turned off Sesame Street and all of a sudden things started to fly off the shelves. They actually flew around the room. They turned Sesame Street back on and it stopped.

Then a few years ago a teacher was leaving late one night when she saw a group of Hawaiian - clothed people walking past the room. She saw them and quickly left the area.

My classroom would occasionally get broken into by kids. But these kids were good about breaking in, oddly enough. They would do strange things like clean up all the garbage and never leave a mess. One morning we came into work and found that they broke in, but the room was left open and messy. It was covered in trash and we think the kids got scared off by ghosts, but we will never really know.

Personally, I’ve experienced times where I’d been sitting at the computer with my back to the desk, no one around and the windows closed, and I would hear things rattling on my desk, like papers shuffling. There would be no wind, and when I would look up it would stop. But once I looked away it would start again. I would say “Cut it out,” and it would stop. This has happened more than once. I would also be at the door talking to someone in my empty room empty when I would see a man walk from my room to the next, but there would be no man there. Another thing that would happen frequently is that my door would open and close, open and close, all on its own. The kids would always go to see who it was, but there would never be anyone there. According to the Hawaiian priestess, the area that my classroom is in is a porthole or hot spot for activity.

There have been so many strange things happening at the school that they would constantly get it blessed. When the rooms were renovated, the construction workers got the two rooms that have the most spiritual activity blessed, without previous knowledge of the hauntings. The school didn’t tell them anything about those rooms.

Solomon Elementary School has been blessed by a baptism minister, by the school kupuna, and by Hawaiian priests. One Kahuna spread a little bit of light on why the school may have such spiritual activity. She said that there is a lot of activity there because it is close to the Kolekole Pass where the warriors of Wahiawa and Waianae would meet in battle.

The Haunted Oahu Post Office

Informant: Male/63/Japanese ancestry
Location: Honolulu, Oahu

Strange things happen at the main post office near the airport on Oahu, where I used to work. A colleague of mine was walking down one of the hallways when he saw a dog. It ran away when it saw him, and suddenly he saw a big Hawaiian man without a shirt on. He called out to him, “Hey, what are you doing?” The Hawaiian man walked away and disappeared through some equipment.

Another time after using the bathroom, I was washing my hand at one of two sinks when suddenly the faucet of the other sink turned on by itself. I looked around, but there was nobody else in the bathroom with me. I was totally alone.

I don’t know the history of the building, but people say that it is supposedly haunted.
