The Mossy Green Wolf of Kailua

Informant: Male/38/Chinese-Caucasian
Location: Kailua, Oahu,  HI

I'm no writer and don't claim to be a story teller. This story really happened, so I found a site that I can tell it on.

This happened back in 1987 when I was 12 years old on [REDACTED] Way in Kailua, Oahu. The kids in the neighborhood used to come out late and play a game called "chuck-it." It was a very quiet cul-de-sac, so no one cared that we would play all night long.

So here it is. We were all hiding in bushes and trees, hiding from the person that was "it." I remember this clearly 'cause it freaked me out and I still think of it today. The rain had just come through at about 2:00 a.m. Yes, we played in the rain too. We were all getting wet and the person who was it had tagged me. I had to come out of my hiding place and go to my friend and neighbor Chad Parris' porch while they continued searching for everyone else. While I was walking across the neighbors long driveway I felt something was looking at me.

I looked back to my left and saw a dark green wolf with bright green eyes staring at me as I walked by. Yes, I do know that there are no wolves or foxes in Hawaii. It didn't run as it slowly walked by me. I froze and could only stare back 'cause of how scared I was. The wolf looked like it had wiry hair, but mossy looking. The size was like a normal grey wolf and it showed me his huge fangs. The strange thing is, it just continued on and never growled or barked. It was like he was just letting me know he was there and not to mess with him. It went on to jump the wall and walked along the lake. I yelled for everyone to come over to see what I just saw, and everyone said I was seeing things. I know what I saw. I didn't play with my friends for almost two weeks after that. They would still go out every night, but I was traumatized. The older locals I told the story to say it was the Goddess Pele and kids should never be out that late on Oahu. I moved away a year later and never saw it again. Since then, I have continued to search Hawaii folklore stories or strange animals in Hawaii and have yet to find another person who has seen it.

In 2006, I went to the movies to watch M. Night Shyamalan's The Lady in the Water. During the movie there is a green wolf creature and I was like OMG is this really happening. The creature looked a lot like what I saw, but his version had red eyes had grass on its back instead of moss. I don't know what legend he pulled that creature from, but that was it. Maybe someone knows the legend or myth this creature comes from, but I need to know and will continue searching...

Dried Akule

Informant: Male/52/Japanese ancestry
Location: Ele'ele, Kauai

My boy was about five years old whent this happened. Every Thursday night, my wife used to take him to the library. On their way back, he said out of the blue, "All our ancestors are in the car right now!" My wife thought, oh crap. So she asked who was there. My boy started listing off aunts and uncles who had passed away, and named my brother, who had passed away one or two years prior. My wife asked what they wanted, and my boy said they just wanted to say hi.

He said when they got near Ele'ele McDonald's, all of the spirits left the car, except my brother. My boy asked him, "You not going to go get McDonald's too? You don't want to eat a cheese burger?" My brother told him, no, cheese burgers hurt his stomach. My brother was extremely lactose intolerant, I think maybe he had irritable bowel syndrome. But he hated cheese burgers. I knew this, but there's no way my boy would have known that. My brother then told my boy that he didn't like eating dried akule either, because the salt on it dried out his lips. I didn't know about this, and there's no way my boy would know, so I called my mom to ask.

I told her what my boy had said, and she said, "You know, I knew that he didn't really care for dried akule, but I never knew why." I told her, "Well, now you know."

Menehune of Mililani Mauka

Informant: Male/Age unknown/ Japanese Ancestry
Location: Mililani Mauka, Oahu

I am hoping by sharing this story, other folks in Mililani Mauka will share their stories. There is definitely something going on up here but I can’t seem to find any history, tales, fact or fiction supporting my experiences up here.

My family and I moved into a brand new home in Kapanoe, a subdivision at the top of Mililani Mauka, about six years ago. My son, now eight, was two at the time. Many nights at around 2 am, he would call out for me and I would wearily go to his room, hop in bed with him where we would both fall asleep. One night, after calling for me, he pointed to a corner of his room and asked, “Daddy, who’s that?” I am actually blind but, needless to say, the hair on my arms and the back of my neck stood straight up. The next night, I permanently moved into his bedroom.

Over the next month or so, my son would regularly awaken around 2 am, sit up, and stare at this particular corner of his room. He described what he saw to me as a boy that looked like a little man. One night, I asked my son if the little man-boy was telling him anything. My son replied, “Yeah, he’s putting his finger to his lips and telling me ‘Shhh.’” That was it – I called a kahu to bless the house, which he did, and planted a couple dozen ti leaves all around the house.

Over the years, my son gradually saw less and less of this little man-boy but would still occasionally wake up at around 2 am and jump into bed with me as I was, and still am, sleeping in his room. Although these appearances diminished, I couldn’t help but notice that, even with our windows closed, shutters would open and doors would slam. Could this little man-boy be a menehune just trying to befriend my son and play pranks on me? For the longest time, I didn’t bring this up with anyone except for a few family members and friends who I knew wouldn’t laugh at me.

One day this past Summer, for some reason, while talking to a former neighbor who was visiting, I mentioned this little man-boy spirit or ghost to him and I could tell from his reaction that he knew exactly what I was talking about. He shared how, when he lived in the neighborhood and had a sleep-over birthday party for his son, one of the boys was woken and startled by this very same little man-boy, got freaked out, and insisted his parents pick him up right then and there … at 2:00 a.m.
Then, just a few weeks ago, a neighbor across the street mentioned how his young son woke up one night at around 2 am and saw something little walking up the stairs toward his room. And to top all of these encounters off, the day after Halloween, I bumped into my new next door neighbors who embarrassingly laughed and asked if I knew about any ghosts or menehune in the neighborhood. I froze, dropped my jaw, got chicken skin up and down both arms and on the back of my neck … “Why?” I asked. The husband replied, "because our two-year old was talking to someone last night and when we asked who it was, she said a little boy. … and when we asked if the little boy said anything, our two-year old simply put her finger to her lips and said, ‘hush’”.

The Sound of Children Laughing

Informant: Female/age unknown/Portuguese ancestry
Location: Lihue, Kaua’i

I used to work in a two-story office building on the bottom floor. It was converted into an optometry office from a pediatric office of a very well – loved doctor that had died. After I started working there, I would hear things coming from the upstairs part of the building.

It sounded like children. It sounded like they were running around upstairs laughing and screaming. I would hear these noises often enough to know it wasn’t my imagination.

One night I was working late, and my husband came in to drop off some dinner for me. The noise started. He said, “It sounds like there’s children playing upstairs…” It was far passed closing time. There’s no way any children would be up there.

The Meatroom

Informant: Male/31/ Mixed ancestry
Location: Kauai

The mid 80’s was a good time for business, especially in the grocery retail sector. Workforce was healthy and sales were on the upswing. Tourism was starting to gain steam and energy costs were down. One store in particular had a hard time retaining workers, particularly in the meat department. Keep in mind that most meat cutters in this one particular store were of Filipino ancestry and speaking out was not something they did. But it started to gain attention when meat cutters would be hired one day, they would work the night shift, and they would quit. No two weeks notice, no nothing, they would just walk off. Eventually management was tasked with filling in and one particular manager, Seiji, and his encounter over a series of three nights is what has prompted me to telling you this tale.

Seiji

"No one wants to go there! I won’t even go there! That place is haunted and it is just not safe." Seiji and I had a chance to talk one day. He had since been retired for over 12 years but is still visibly shaken from his experience. "You gotta understand, the workers back then, many of them came from the plantation and would not let management know. They refused to speak out against the company or their bosses. They came and went until finally I got stuck working nights in the meat room. My primary responsibility was to clean carcasses and prep them for the next day’s butchers and clean the meat room down.

"The first night I was there, the store had just closed and it was me and the office manager left in the store. I walked up front to let her out and told her I still had to shoot the meat room down. As I walked back the music started playing over the speakers. How weird! We always turn the music off and I swear it was off, but it just turned on! I walked back, opened the office door and turned it back off.

"As I rounded the corner the light in the meat room was off and I swear I left it on. I hit the switch but no light. I flicked the switch up and down but still no light. I walked up front to the office to grab the keys to the storage room and as I headed to the back office I noticed that the light in the meat room was back on again. By now I was starting to get a little scared, but growing up in Waimea Valley, we encounter lots of strange happenings. I had to shoot the meat room down and sterilize the equipment before I went home and since there were no carcasses to clean, I was looking forward to getting home a little early."

Tuesday Night - Day One

"I felt very groggy all day and called in to see if it was okay to come in right before closing. Our manger said that it was okay but there were three pig carcasses that came in and they needed to be prepped for tomorrow. I came in shortly before 10:00 p.m. just in time to let her out and start work. As I walked to the meat room I was suddenly overwhelmed by the smell of rotting flesh. It was horrible! Smelled like a dead rat! This is not something that you want in a grocery store and definitely not something you want in your meat room. As soon as I flicked on the light, the smell was gone. I tried to walk around to see if I could smell it but it was no longer present. I told myself how funny the tricks that your mind plays on you.

"I opened the walk in chill and saw three pig carcasses hanging from stainless steel meat hooks. They were butterflied and needed some prepping for tomorrow. Prepping these carcasses involved butchering them into smaller more manageable cuts so the butchers can handle them better to get you pork cutlets, tenderloins, and Boston butts wrapped up and placed on the shelf for you to buy. I unhooked my first carcass and wheeled it to the cutting room table. All of a sudden, I heard the distinct sound of the meat saw buzzing away.

"What the hell!!! A meat room is a place of safety, all equipment is secured, the floors are clean and slip resistant, and there is a place for everything and everything is in its place. So for a meat saw, which is basically a table mounted circular saw starts to go off on its own, it sends shivers up you spine. I walked over to hit the switch and noticed it was in the off position. I went to pull the plug and it wasn’t even plugged in! By this time I was truly petrified with fear. I started to run towards the door when all of a sudden it shut off. Back then I tried to convince myself that there must have been some electric current that was store in the motor but we all know this is physically impossible as there are no batteries in a saw.

"And that smell, it started up again.

"The smell of decomposing flesh was thick and overwhelmed me as I dry heaved three or four times. I walked around trying to locate the source but could not find it. All of a sudden, I heard a soft buzzing sound. It sounded like hundreds of flies hovering but there were none in sight. I walked slowly to the walk in chill and put my ear to the door. I could hear a sound that sounded like hundreds if not thousands of flies were in the walk in chill. Suddenly from in the chill I could hear the sound of metal creaking. Squeak squeak squeak. Like a squeaky tire. I opened up the door and what I saw next still haunts me to this day.

"One of the remaining pig carcasses that was hanging on a hook was swinging back and forth as if someone was pushing it. And when I say swinging it was almost hitting the roof of the chill. I tried to run, my mind told me to run but I froze. I couldn’t move. And there I was, watching as this carcass dangled from a meat hook swinging back and forth like a kid being pushed by their daddy on the swings.

Wednesday Night - Day Two

"I don’t remember what happened next except I awoke the next morning from our boss’s tapping on my window. I had slept in my car in the store parking lot. I rolled my window down and he was furious.

'Seiji! You left the goddam meat room in a mess! The walk in chill door was open and all the meat has to be thrown out!' I tried to explain, but I could tell he thought I was making it up. I ended up being suspended for three days. I live alone, and my closest neighbor is a five minute walk down a dirt path. I never felt lonely or afraid of being alone but those three days were hard to deal with. I mentioned it to no one except co-workers were calling and asking what the hell happened. I am fortunate that my boss had the courtesy to keep our short conversation to himself. I returned to work but refused to take the night duties. I was fortunate to be put back on my regular schedule.

"My boss talked about the incidence once and had decided that the long nights and my body’s sleep pattern had caused my mind to play tricks on me. I didn’t imagine this. Those extreme incidents never happened again but I would hear stories from time to time that knives were misplaced, or equipment had moved, their was even talk in the break room of a saw turning itself on but it was typical lunch room chatter and they usually dismissed it with blaming a co worker or how the company needed to buy a new saw.

Thursday Night - Day Three

"One night, there was a false alarm and our boss went in to reset the alarm, I don’t know what happened but the very next day, he had rescheduled our shifts to eliminate anyone from staying in the store past closing. He asked management to bless the store and a few weeks later a kahuna came in. We all walked with her as she chanted and sprinkled water mixed with Hawaiian salt. She dipped her ti leaf into a bowl and sprinkled the walls, the workers, and the floor. She stopped in front of the meat room and her chants grew dim and she had stopped sprinkling her salt water. She stood in front of the door and her eyes were wide as if she had saw or felt something terrifying. She turned back to the company President and whispered something in his ear. I looked over at my boss and his eyes were wide and I knew that he had encountered something that night when he came into the store to reset the alarm.

"The company president turned to us and said, 'She’s going in by herself so we can all just wait here. It is too cramped and we can’t take the risk of anyone getting hurt with all the dangerous equipment we have in there.' We waited outside for 20 minutes until finally she emerged drenched in sweat and looking as if she had run a marathon. She told us everything is fine now, everything we’ll be okay. We walked the rest of the store and enjoyed some pupu and refreshments in the break room after.

"Nothing really happened after that night. A few years ago I ran into the old Hawaiian lady who blesses our store. She hadn’t even aged a bit. I asked her if she remembered blessing the store and she smiled and said, 'I have blessed so much stores it is hard to remember which one.' Instead of stating which store I figured why relive a moment that I was trying to put behind me. So I said farewell, kissed her goodbye and walked off. I took a few steps and heard the old Hawaiian lady say, 'The meat room was built over the graves of three young children, they meant no harm. They was just being kolohe.'

"My hair stood on the back of my neck as I turned around. She stood there, smiling. 'They died many years ago, before the store was built. They died playing when their house burned down. They were playing with the oil lamp. They died from being mischievous. They were still causing mischief, I had to scold them. You know kids, they are kolohe.'

"I never saw the old Hawaiian lady again."

Just Around the Corner

Informant: Female/19/mixed
Location: Aiea, Oahu

My grandmother used own a large house in Aiea a few years ago. I would go over all the time to spend time with her, but there was something about the house that gave me the chills.

Her house had a long dark hall way that connected the two bedrooms and bath to the living room and the kitchen. Whenever I would play in the living room my back would be facing the hallway. On numerous occasions it would feel like someone or thing was watching. However whenever I'd turn around, I'd only catch a glance of a shadow. Just a suggestion of something disappearing around the corner into the kitchen out of view, or back down the hallway.

Whenever I'd investigate, there would be nothing of course, but I still didn't feel right about it, even as a young child. The house has been sold to a new family and I'm wondering if their children see it too.

Learning How to Throw

Informant: Male/39/Portuguese ancestry
Location: Hilo, Big Island

As a child, I used to constantly play outside with a ball. One particular day, I'm playing outside when these two men came up to me.

The two men were old and dressed in stiff, black suits. Something about them seemed like they had come out of the past, like they had come straight out of the 50's.

Oddly enough, they knew my name. They called my name and started to motion for me. I went up to them. They started to talk to me about how to throw the ball. They pretty much taught me how to throw a ball that day.

Sometime later, I was sitting with my mom going through an old family photo album. To my surprise, I found a picture of the two men that taught me how to throw a ball. I was telling my mom about how the two men, when she interrupted me.

"That's impossible. That's my brother and his friend. They died years before you were even born."

The Imaginary Friend

Informant: Male/19/Portuguese Ancestry
Location: Hilo, Big Island

The beginning of this story takes place about six months before I was even born. My parents lived in a small house in a small neighborhood next to a small cemetery. Someone wanted to turn the small neighborhood into a big neighborhood, and so they decided to bulldoze over the cemetery to make way for more houses. The man responsible for the bulldozing, dies of no apparent reason.

And now flash forward about five years.

Most children grew up with a beloved imaginary friend. Someone special, that only they could see. I was no different, or so my parents thought.

First it began with talking to people who weren't there. My parents would hear me having conversations with people in my room. They would take a peek into my room only to discover that I was alone. At first it was cute, their baby boy had an imaginary friend.

Then it escalated to feeding people who weren't there. This quickly turned from cute to annoying as the wasted food began to pile up. My parents would ask me why I was taking extra plates of food to my room. "To feed my friends," I would reply. When my parents would prevent me from taking extra plates of food, I would share my food and hold my spoon up to feed my friends.

Then it went even further with sleepwalking. And it wasn't just any kind of sleepwalking, I'd be sleepwalking and holding hands with people that no one else could see. Every night I would get up and start walking with my hand raised up as if someone taller than me was holding it. I would walk from my bed all the way to the front door until I would bump into it and then wake up. This quickly went from minor annoyance to scaring my parents.

Then everything just stopped. I no longer talked to people. I stopped feeding my food to people who weren't there. And my sleepwalking had ceased. Around the time that all of this stopped, the discovery was made that the bodies in the cemetery that had been bulldozed, were not removed, they were still under the house that had been built over it.

I'm not quite sure what happened to the bodies, I would like to think that they were removed and put into some place they could rest peacefully. However, I do know that creepy things are still lurking in the neighborhood. Old neighbors speak of loud noises coming from an old empty house that was next door to mines. A house that is constantly off and on the market. As soon as it's sold, it seems that it's being sold within a matter of months. That same house will open its windows while you walk past, even though no one is living in it.There's even rumors of a telephone pole that bleeds (not sure how serious one should take that, I'm sure it's just tar or some other dark substance that oozes, yet some people actually feel that it is an ominous sign that warns them that something bad is going to happen).

Now, I live in much quieter neighborhood that has no history of cemeteries, ghosts, or bleeding telephone poles.
